A Practice Driving Log With Night Hours Counted on Their Own: How the Teen Driving Hours Ledger Works

A teen driving log is worth keeping for the day a state asks for the record: a learner's permit, a license requirement, a signed form. The Teen Driving Hours Ledger is built around that day. It is a Google Sheet with a phone form: each time a drive ends, the entry travels form to sheet, and the sheet adds it to the running record of a permit goal, with night hours counted on their own line. Logged in-the-moment, when the car is parked and the drive is still fresh, the record holds every hour with the link to its signed log beside it.

The form that writes to the log

The form is called Log Driving Practice, and a link to it sits at the top of the Dashboard, beside the counted hours. It asks for the date, the route or skills, the supervising adult, the category and the hours, with a link to a photo of the signed log. Route or skills is where the owner writes where the drive went or what it practiced, such as highway merging or parallel parking. Hours go in as a decimal: 1.5 is an hour and a half.

Everything the form collects lands as one row on the Driving Log tab, one row per drive, so the whole history sits in one place, in order.

A goal typed once, on the Setup tab

Under Your Driving Goal, the owner types a goal start date, such as the day the permit was issued, and a goal end date. The owner names a required category with a minimum, such as Night, and, if the state caps one, a capped category with a maximum, such as Instructor Lessons. Then the owner types the numbers from their own state's rules: the total supervised hours, the night hours and any cap.

States set these differently and change them, so the sheet carries no state's figures. Every number is a cell the owner types and can change, and the capped category is optional.

Your Requirements, on the Dashboard

The Dashboard opens with the counted hours, the hours in the required category, which is Night in the sample, and the days left until the goal ends. Below that is a ladder called Your Requirements. Each row is one rule, with its target, the owner's figure, a progress bar and a status. There are four status words: Met, On pace, Behind and Check.

A pace line above the ladder reads the recent rate forward: "At your last-8-weeks pace … you reach the total around …", set beside the goal end date. Hours over a maximum are shown on the ladder and kept out of the counted total.

Hours by category and by supervising adult

Below the ladder, the Dashboard breaks the hours down two ways: Hours by Category, with each category's hours, entries and share, and Hours by Supervising Adult, with the same figures for each licensed adult who rode along. A Recent Drives list shows the latest entries.

Log links, counted

Each entry has a Log Link column for a link to a photo of the signed driving log. The Dashboard counts the log links on file and lists the drives still waiting for one, under Your Signed Logs. The drive and the proof of it sit in the same row, so the drives that still need a signature are easy to find.

A summary to copy onto the state's form

The Driving Summary tab gathers a date range into the totals the form asks for: hours in the range, drives logged, log links on file, night hours, and the capped category's hours before the cap. Below the totals are hours by category and by supervising adult, and every drive in the range with its log link. The owner copies the totals onto the form the state asks for.

Categories in the owner's own words

The Customize Forms tab holds one short list, Categories. It fills the Category dropdown on the form and starts with Day, Night and Instructor Lessons. Any category can be renamed to match the state's wording, added to or removed. Past entries keep their original category when one is renamed or deleted; only new form entries use the updated list.

What the Teen Driving Hours Ledger does not do

The Teen Driving Hours Ledger keeps the owner's own record of the practice driving logged. It does not verify, certify or submit hours, and it is not affiliated with any state, motor vehicle agency, driving school or insurer. Requirements differ by state and can change, so the owner confirms them with the state's motor vehicle agency, and the state decides what counts.

Starting with a sample, then making it your own

The Teen Driving Hours Ledger arrives filled with a sample set of practice drives, so every panel on the Dashboard shows something real. The routes and supervising adults are invented. Clear Sample Data, on the custom Ledger & Light menu, removes the sample drives and leaves the sheet ready for the owner's own.

Owned, not rented

The Teen Driving Hours Ledger is a Google Sheet bought once and kept. It lives in the owner's own Google Drive with no subscription to renew, and because the log is a list of rows, the history stays in one file for as long as the goal runs.
