We built Ledger & Light to do specific things well and nothing else. That's not a limitation — it's the product for the business you're running
When you're starting a business — or formalizing one that's been running informally — the instinct is to acquire the infrastructure you think you'll eventually need. Get the accounting software that real businesses use. Set up the systems that scale.
This instinct is understandable. It's also how most freelancers end up with a subscription to software they use to log fifteen transactions a month.
Complexity has a cost
Every tool you add to your workflow carries a hidden price beyond the subscription fee: the time to learn it, the overhead to maintain it, the mental space it occupies when it underperforms or needs attention. For tools that are significantly more capable than the work requires, this overhead rarely pays off.
A self-employed person doing client work doesn't have the financial complexity that justifies a full accounting platform. One business checking account. A consistent set of vendors. A handful of expense categories that recur every month. That's a manageable system. Adding bank feeds, automated categorization, and AI-generated estimates to a system that size doesn't reduce the work — it adds a verification layer to every transaction.
What we built and why
We built Ledger & Light to do specific things well: log expenses at the moment they happen, calculate mileage deductions at the correct IRS rate, organize records into the structure tax returns require. And nothing else.
No bank import. No AI categorization. No automated quarterly tax estimates. These aren't features we haven't built yet — they're decisions. For the businesses Ledger & Light is built for, automation adds a review step rather than removing one. You know what you spent. You know why. A form that captures that knowledge at the moment it exists is more accurate than an algorithm that guesses it later.
The Expense Form and Mileage Form are linked Google Forms you open on your phone. Fill in what you know — because you just spent the money or drove the miles — and submit. The record is complete because you made it complete.
The right inflection point
There's a real point at which a full accounting platform earns its complexity. Employees on payroll. Clients on net payment terms. Multiple bank accounts that require reconciliation. Revenue that needs accrual accounting rather than cash-basis tracking. When you're there, the infrastructure matches the problem.
Until then, buying tools for a business you don't yet have usually means paying for features you won't use, learning systems that don't match your actual workflow, and spending time on overhead instead of work.
